Golden ratio: what is the harmonic proportion of the face and how to approach the ideal
Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, Natalia Vodianova, Megan Fox and other celebrities are regularly included in the lists of the most beautiful and sexy celebrities. And for good reason: their appearance corresponds to certain canons. Is it possible to approach them? We worked together with a plastic surgeon and cosmetologist.
The formula of beauty
One of the parameters of the ideal of beauty is considered to correspond to the so-called Golden ratio: the proportion of the face in the ratio of 1 to 1.618. The distances between the lips, chin, nose, forehead and eyes are examined. But, you must agree, even without any formulas, we automatically read people’s beautiful faces. The question is that modern means quite allow you to approach the standards of beauty. Even those who had a fairly ordinary genetic set by nature.
For example, recently the most beautiful woman was recognized as the model Bella Hadid (exactly within the framework of compliance with the Golden section). But the girl spent several years of her life on plastic surgery: changed the shape of the nose, lips, got rid of lumps of bish, made a breast… Our expert confirms that perfect faces by nature are extremely rare and many stars really resorted to the services of plastic surgeons. It is understandable, appearance is their working tool.
Not everything can be fixed, but a lot
“When we talk about the ideal, the so-called Golden section, we mean symmetry, harmony of the face. But for most people, the right eye does not match the size of the left, the chin is crooked due to an incorrect bite, the nose is too small or, conversely, large. Or there is a pronounced snub nose or hump. Nostrils also matter: they should not be too small or protruding. There are many nuances. If we talk about eyes, we mean large, open. The almond-shaped section of the eyes is always held in high esteem. Slightly sunken cheeks always work on the aristocratic face, so many dream of high cheekbones.
Do not think that a plastic surgeon is a wizard who can do everything. The source data is still important. After all, if there is a deformity at the level of deep structures, an innate asymmetry of the muscles, or a serious injury, a skull of a certain shape, one eye socket is larger than the other – there is little to help. You need to adjust your appearance in the available ways, emphasize your strengths. The natural cut of the eyes is very difficult to change. If the eye is not deep-set, you can tighten the skin structure on the eyelids themselves, a lateral vector, and create the illusion of an almond-shaped eye. But if a girl has deep-set eyes, this trick is harder to pull off. And, of course, we need to understand which type we are working with: Caucasian or Asian. Everyone has their own characteristics.
For example, I mentioned that high cheekbones always give the face a more refined appearance. A popular operation to achieve this effect is to remove bish lumps. These fat “bags” are removed quite easily: the mucosa is dissected from the inside of the cheeks. The size of the lumps, on average, one and a half teaspoons, but sometimes a tablespoon. After three weeks, the skin shrinks, the swelling subsides and the face appears so attractive sunken cheeks. But with overweight, the effect is, of course, less obvious – you will need to lose weight. By the way, Asian bish lumps are highly developed – up to one and a half tablespoons.”
Beauty in the eyes of the beholder
We asked the surgeon to evaluate the faces of Hollywood’s recognized beauties-Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox, Beyonce and our supermodel Natalia Vodianova. And we were convinced that the concept of beauty is subjective, even when a plastic specialist takes it upon himself to analyze it.
“I wouldn’t call Scarlett Johansson beautiful. Yes, it has significant advantages, if we talk about appearance. These are almond-shaped eyes of a beautiful color and sensual lips. Otherwise, it is not a standard of beauty, in my opinion.
Jolie has an aristocratic face, clear contours: a small nose, plump lips, a perfect contour, a beautiful shape of the eyebrows, a symmetrical face – it is no coincidence that for many she is the ideal of beauty. Vodianova has pronounced eyes of a beautiful color, a small nose, plump lips, and a doll – like type-this makes her attractive. Megan Fox has high cheekbones, a neat nose, beautiful lips, and a well-proportioned face.
Beyonce is a beautiful girl by nature: her strengths are large eyes and well-defined lips. But all of these celebrities, with the exception of Vodianova, brought their appearance to perfection with the help of specialists: Scarlett Johansson clearly made a nose that was wide enough, Jolie also resorted to rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and removed lumps of bish. Beyonce clearly narrowed the back of her nose, and Megan had blepharoplasty to make her eyes look “cat-like”.
Here I immediately want to remember the slanders of psychologists about how important it is to develop charisma and accept ourselves as we are. After all, everyone remembers how British plastic surgeon Julian De Silva made a sketch of the perfect beauty based on the requests of his clients, who dreamed of the perfect nose of Kate Middleton, lips and cheekbones of Angelina Jolie and eyebrows of Jennifer Lopez. The resulting girl is not bad-looking, but, to put it mildly, no one remembers her. Too correct.

Complete symmetry is not beautiful
“Try to put two right or two left images together – this is very unusual for the human eye. We notice a pronounced asymmetry. It is these imperfections that modern cosmetology smooths out.
Irina Shayk, Regina Todorenko, and Svetlana Khodchenkova fall under the canons of more ideal stars, if we talk about domestic ones. From the point of view of beauty they have well-defined and balanced bone framework of the face: high forehead with frontal humps, high cheekbones, straight nose correct, balance the upper and lower jaw, defined chin and jaw line. The correct ratio of the upper, middle and lower third of the face. Everything in General creates the effect of a slightly elongated triangle. And as for the soft tissues, they are smooth lines, without sharp changes, repeating the bone framework. The less shadow on your face, the better.
Modern cosmetology can do anything. In its expert part, it combines hardware procedures that work on the entire complex of soft tissues and injection procedures that make up for lost volumes and fix the ligamentous apparatus of the face. The devices are a combination of modern lasers and ultrasonic SMAS technologies. I would call them SMART procedures. With the help of these wonderful instruments we are bringing the layer in which there was age-related failure. And all without incisions, anesthesia and rehabilitation. And then, after hardware rejuvenation and tissue reduction, we set the accents of the Golden section with the help of filers. And a beautiful sloping forehead, and a hair-like look, and high cheekbones, and fashionable angles of the lower jaw, and a straight perfect nose, and much more.”
